What is the Vienna Opera Ball?
The Vienna Opera Ball (Wiener Opernball) is Austria's most prestigious society event, held at the Vienna State Opera on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday since 1935. The auditorium is transformed into a ballroom for around 5,000 guests, opened by more than a hundred debutant couples dancing the traditional polonaise and waltz. Around 450 balls take place in Vienna each season — the Opera Ball is the pinnacle.
